If you’re a college student like me, then your life just got a whole lot busier and more stressful. With the school year starting back up, and the constant juggling act between studying, relaxing, and having fun beginning again as well, finding ways to unwind and forget about stress for a minute is so important. Recently, I’ve been turning towards comedy shows to help me destress, probably watching way too much TV in the process. Here is my list of some amazing comedy shows I’ve watched recently that you need to watch.
I can’t speak highly enough of this show, and I really believe that it is one of the best comedies on television that I’ve seen. The show follows a group of Northern Irish teen girls and an English boy as they navigate high school during the Irish Troubles of the 90s. If you like 90s sitcoms, Irish humor, teen humor, or just funny TV shows in general, then you should definitely give Derry Girls a try! Fair warning though, you’ll ultimately be disappointed that there are only 12 episodes out so far.
Schitt’s creek is another show that I finished much too quickly and now have to not-so-patiently wait for the next season to come out on Netflix. The shows see’s the wealthy Rose family as their assets are possessed by the government and they are left moving to a town called Schitt’s Creek, a town they had originally purchased as a joke. Every season just gets better as you get to know the characters and start to see them grow and adapt to their new situation. It’s hilarious, at times heartwarming, and totally binge-worthy.
The Tick, an Amazon original comedy, is a wacky and bizarre spoof on superhero shows and media. There are so many jokes crammed into each episode, it’s worth rewatching to catch all the jokes you missed the first time. Of all the shows on the list, The Tick’s comedy style is probably the most niche. I mean, I love the show, but I also recognize that it’s pretty damn weird. If you are a fan of dry and slightly strange humor, superhero shows, or spoofs of certain genres, then you’d love The Tick!
Speaking of spoofs, American Vandal is a spoof of true crime documentaries, while somehow managing to feel kind of like a real documentary at the same time. It’s totally juvenile and obscene humor, so I was fully expecting to not find it funny, but I actually had a hard time containing my laughter (warning: do not watch this in a library). Season 1 is definitely stronger than season 2, but season 2 still has a few good moments. It’s laugh-out-loud funny with a captivating mystery as a backdrop, keeping you glued to the screen until the season is over.
A kid’s show that is totally not just for kids, Gravity Falls is right up there with Disney greats like Phineas and Ferb or Kim Possible. The show follows twins Dipper and Mabel Pines as they spend the summer with their great uncle Stan in Gravity Falls, Oregon. Everything is not as it seems in Gravity Falls, and Dipper, Mabel, and their friends seek to uncover the supernatural mysteries of the town. I feel like the best way to describe the show would be that it is a mix of the X-Files and Rick and Morty, but a family friendly version.
I love watching TV shows, and comedies are definitely my favorites. There are of course many more shows I could put on this list (Futurama, Malcolm in the Middle, Parks and Rec, etc), so I just chose to focus on ones I’ve watched recently. Whether you’re busy and looking for a way to destress, or bored and just want to watch something entertaining, these shows are all absolutely hilarious (the trailers really don’t do them justice).
