Streaming Services Ranked – Netflix vs Hulu vs Amazon Prime Video

Reviews
Netflix
Hulu
Prime Video

Streaming services are slowly but surely starting to replace cable television, but each streaming platform has different shows and movies that it offers. Where not everyone wants to spend the money to get every streaming service that exists, knowing the pros and cons of different streaming platforms helps people watch the shows and movies they want to without breaking the bank.

I’ve compiled a pros and cons list for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, and have ranked each of them according to my personal preferences. I include the price, mobile app, and some of the shows and movies available as part of my ranking.

Netflix

Pros

  • Great original content
  • Large selection of both movies and shows
  • Good mobile app
  • Ability to download shows
  • Binge-friendly format

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Have to wait for new seasons to come out
  • Often remove old shows/movies

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services, and for good reason. The biggest benefit to Netflix in my opinion are all of their original shows and movies, such as Stranger Things, Derry Girls, Mulan (one of my all-time favorite movies), and many more. Also, they have one of the better mobile apps, with an intuitive design and the ability to download certain videos.

However, there are some problems with Netflix, the biggest of which for me is the price. Not only is Netflix pretty expensive, but they have also been raising their prices recently. The lowest plan starts at $9 dollars a month but has limitations such as no HD videos and viewing on only one screen at a time, while the most expensive plan costs $16 a month. The other biggest drawback for me is that you have to wait a long time for newer seasons and episodes to come out on Netflix.

Hulu

Pros

  • Episodes come out on Hulu as they come out on TV
  • Options for add-ons like live TV, HBO, and Spotify plans
  • Large selection of TV shows
  • Cheaper option

Cons

  • Not as many movies as Netflix
  • Mobile app isn’t great
  • Glitches occasionally on the website and mobile app

Hulu is an amazing option if you’re looking for a large selection of TV shows, especially current shows. One of the biggest benefits of Hulu over Netflix is the fact that episodes are often released on Hulu as they come out on TV, whereas Netflix makes you wait a long time. While this does make shows less binge-friendly, it’s great if you don’t have cable but still want to watch cable shows as they come out. Some of my favorite shows on Hulu are The Good Place and Veronica Mars. I haven’t seen too many Hulu original shows (season 1 of Runaways was pretty good), but I have heard good things about most of them.

I also really like how customizable the plans are, with various price points and add-ons to suit different needs. They also offer student discounts, making it a great option for people in college. However, I will say that the mobile app isn’t the best, and I often receive error messages when I try to watch something online (this could be an isolated problem though). Also, I would recommend Netflix over Hulu if you watch movies but not TV shows, as I think Netflix’s movie selection is better.

Prime Video

Pros

  • Comes with Amazon Prime
  • Great original content
  • Ability to rent straight from the site if a show or movie is not available
  • Not too expensive, and student pricing available

Cons

  • Not always clear whether or not something is actually free or if you have to pay extra
  • Streaming online is not compatible with certain plug-ins
  • The app is good, but has some issues

Prime video is such a great option, if only because you get the other benefits of Amazon Prime as well. I mean, free 2-day shipping, special deals, and access to their entire library of shows and movies for $13 dollars a month or $119 a year is kind of an insane deal. They have a great selection, including shows like Psych and The Tick, but I will say I think the show selection is better than the movie selection. However, you can rent shows or movies straight from the site if it’s not available for free.

My biggest complaint with Prime Video is that it, for some reason, makes my comuter overheat when I try to watch videos. Now, I’ve talked to other people who don’t share this problem, so it’s probably not too big of a problem, but it does mean that you may need to download a different plug-in or the Prime Video app to watch something. The app is fine but not the most intuitive, and it starts the next video way too quickly. And finally, I don’t like that shows and movies not included with the actual prime membership often show up in searches, as it makes it confusing as to which videos you can actually watch.

Conclusion

All of the streaming platforms listed above are great options for streaming shows and movies for different reasons. Netflix is best for people who watch a lot of shows and movies, and who can afford to pay a little extra. Hulu is best for students and people who may want to stop paying for cable. And finally, Prime Video is best for people who use Amazon regularly and would benefit from the additional benefits of Prime.

Overall, my top pick out of these three would be Prime Video. It is just such a good deal with the other benefits of Prime, not to mention they have a huge selection of videos (with some pretty great original ones as well). My second choice would be Hulu because of it’s relatively low cost and the ability to add on extra services like Showtime and Live TV. Finally, while I love Netflix and its absolutely huge library of shows, movies, and original content, the high (and rising) cost does limit its appeal for me.

At the end of the day, you really can’t go wrong with either Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video. Each of them has their drawbacks, but ultimately the benefits outweigh those problems. Review of Avatar: the Last Airbender

Avatar Aang in Avatar: the Last Airbender

Writing a review of Avatar: the Last Airbender is extremely easy for me. I’ll go ahead and tell you now, I give it 6 stars out of 5, an A++, 110%, and whatever other ways would allow me to express my love for ATLA. Growing up, it was one of my favorite shows, and even over 10 years later, it still remains one of the best shows I’ve seen (I’ve actually seen it about 5 or 6 times now). In today’s post, I’ll be reviewing and explaining why Avatar the Last Airbender is an amazing show, and why I think everyone should watch it!

Criteria

My criteria for evaluating the show includes how likable the characters are and their development/character arcs, how original, entertaining, and cohesive the overall plot and story are, the quality of dialogue, including emotional or humorous moments in the show, and the overall pacing of each episode, season, and the series as whole.

Below, I have my ratings on a scale from 1 to 10 (with 10 being the highest) for each individual category, as well as for the show as a whole.

Story/Plot:9

Characters: 10

Dialogue: 8

Pacing: 8

Show: 10

Story and Plot

With an imaginative and expansive world, well-developed lore, and a unique concept, the story of Avatar: the Last Airbender is truly one of the best. Rather than explaining the story to you myself, I’ve instead decided to let the show itself tell you. The intro perfectly sets up the show and gives an insight into the world and characters as an added bonus.

Intro to Avatar: the Last Airbender

While the show’s story and concept as a whole are amazing, the plot of each season and each individual episode are just as strong. Each season builds upon the one before, with evolving character arcs and relationships, an increasingly mature tone, and an exciting overarching plot that drives the plot of each episode. However, some individual episodes are perhaps not as strong as the others, either by not advancing the plot or characters much, or by generally lacking the same level of emotional punch packed into the other episodes. That being said, every episode is thoroughly enjoyable and still worth watching.

Characters

The characters in ATLA are easily the highlight for me. Each one is funny, endearing, and entirely lovable, while also each being entirely unique. The characters grow and mature over the course of the three seasons, with truly some of the best written character arcs in any show. Each of the characters have well-developed and changing relationships with the other characters they interact with, making the characters and the show as a whole feel authentic and believable.

As the seasons go on, the characters and their relationships evolve with the plot. Avatar is a children’s show (and the first season especially reflects this), but as the characters grow up over the course of the show, so too does the overall tone of the story. While the main characters are very young and certainly appeal to a younger audience, they usually come off as endearing rather than annoying, a rare thing for many kid’s shows. If I had to pick a favorite character, I honestly would have trouble deciding between them.

Dialogue

Avatar’s dialogue is generally fantastic, perfectly complementing the amazing characters. The writing is funny, energetic, thoughtful, introspective, witty, and at times deeply moving and inspiring. However, when deciding what to say about the dialogue, I struggled to be objective and put my personal feelings towards the show aside.

Even though I do truly feel like the dialogue is great, I do feel it is necessary to point out the fact that it is ultimately a kid’s show. While not afraid to explore deep topics such as the loss of loved ones, some of the jokes are definitely geared towards kids. I personally still find it funny and enjoyable, but some people may find some of the dialogue to be tedious or juvenile.

Overall, the dialogue is still a large part of what makes the show so great. Each character has their own unique voice and sense of humor, and the different personalities perfectly play off each other. Click here to see just a few of the most iconic lines from the show!

Pacing

The pacing of Avatar is overall fantastic (are you sensing a common theme yet?), with plenty of great exciting moments, action sequences, and emotional scenes. However, there are some aspects that do lower my overall score for pacing.

First, while I appreciate that the show grows and matures over the three seasons, this means that the first season seems a lot slower and less exciting in comparison to the others. Also, there are some filler episodes that don’t do too much to advance the plot or characters. While those filler episodes are often still entertaining, they do slow down the overall pacing a bit.

Avatar Review – Final Thoughts

I’m not gonna lie, I do feel a little biased towards this show. I mean, the nostalgia alone is enough to make me want to rate Avatar a 10 out of 10. But even putting my bias aside and looking at the show objectively, it still holds up as an amazing show. If you weren’t already convinced, it even has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a 9.2/10 rating on IMDb.

Avatar is funny, heartwarming, exciting, beautiful, and so much more. It is probably my favorite show ever, and I know a lot of other people who feel the same. I cannot recommend this show highly enough.
